Staff Applications Engineer (Debug)
Role Summary
The Staff Applications Engineer (Debug) works with Arm partners to diagnose and resolve complex software and SoC bring-up issues. The role sits within Applications Engineering and focuses on technical customer support, on-site debugging, and collaboration with product engineering to improve tools and workflows.
Experience Level
Senior β minimum 12 years of relevant professional experience in applications engineering, embedded software, debug, or SoC bring-up.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include direct customer support, debugging, and enabling partner success with Arm IP and tools.
- Investigate and resolve complex software/hardware integration and debug issues via support portals, virtual meetings, and on-site customer engagements.
- Support hardware bring-up and SoC-level problem identification and resolution.
- Work closely with product engineering to raise defects, improve tools and documentation, and provide actionable feedback.
- Create practical software examples, knowledge articles, and documentation to accelerate customer adoption and troubleshooting.
- Deliver training and knowledge transfer to customers and internal teams; mentor and support the development of other engineers.
- Occasional international and local travel to customer sites.

Core technical skills and professional experience required for the role.
Must-have:
- 12+ years experience in applications engineering, embedded software development, debug engineering, or SoC bring-up.
- Experience developing or debugging firmware/drivers and low-level software that interacts with hardware.
- Proficiency in C/C++ and assembly for low-level debugging and bring-up tasks.
- Practical experience with SoC bring-up, multi-processor systems, and system-level architecture (including power/clock domains).
- Knowledge of low-level debugging techniques and interfaces such as JTAG.
- Experience working in customer-facing support roles and collaborating with cross-functional engineering teams.
- Self-motivated, adaptable, and able to lead change in technical customer engagements.
Nice-to-have:
- Experience with Arm CoreSight architecture and familiarity with Arm products and software ecosystem.
- Background in hardware or application performance debugging.
- Python scripting for tooling or automation.
- Experience running software on FPGAs, emulation platforms, or modelling technologies.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related technical field; other subject areas considered with confirmed practical experience or equivalent professional experience.
