Sr. Staff Engineer, IP Runtime
TenstorrentJob Title
Sr. Staff Engineer, IP Runtime
Role Summary
Design and implement low-level runtime software that controls initialization, dispatch, scheduling, synchronization, and resource management across custom processor and accelerator IP. Work at the hardware/software boundary to translate hardware specifications into reliable, high-performance runtime behavior.
This is a hybrid role based in Toronto, ON or Austin, TX and collaborates closely with hardware, firmware, compiler, and systems teams to drive bring-up, debugging, and performance optimization.
Experience Level
Senior. The role expects an experienced engineer with a track record delivering complex, performance-critical systems (no specific years-of-experience listed).
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities focus on runtime architecture, implementation, and performance.
- Define runtime architecture for execution, scheduling, synchronization, and resource management across custom processors, accelerators, memory, and data-movement IP.
- Implement low-level runtime components that initialize hardware IP, dispatch work, coordinate dependencies, and manage resources.
- Design efficient runtime interfaces and data-movement paths for predictable memory access and execution.
- Analyze end-to-end bottlenecks and drive improvements in latency, throughput, scalability, and reliability.
- Lead technical direction of the runtime stack, engage with customers and field teams, and translate workload needs into runtime improvements while remaining hands-on with code, bring-up, and debugging.
Requirements
Requirements are divided into must-have skills and useful additional experience.
Must-have:
- Expert in C or C++ with experience designing and delivering complex, performance-critical systems.
- Experience working close to hardware in low-level, embedded, bare-metal, or accelerator environments and translating hardware specs into software behavior.
- Strong understanding of runtime fundamentals: command execution, scheduling, synchronization, memory movement, resource management, and parallelism.
- Proven ability to debug and optimize systems end-to-end, especially at the hardware/software boundary.
- Technical leadership and effective cross-team collaboration; experience mentoring engineers.
Nice-to-have:
- Experience with RISC-V processors, accelerator engines, or custom silicon IP.
- Background in firmware, compiler interactions, bring-up, and performance analysis on parallel hardware.
Education Requirements
Not specified.
