Job Title

Sr. Staff CPU Physical Design CAD Engineer

Role Summary

Join the CPU Engineering team responsible for building and supporting high-performance place-and-route (P&R) CAD tools and flows for custom CPUs. The role focuses on delivering implementation flows that meet aggressive power, performance and area (PPA) targets and on providing methodology and tooling support to physical design teams worldwide.

Experience Level

Senior-level. Typical expectation is multi-year experience in physical design or CAD engineering; preferred candidates have a long track record (around 10+ years) in P&R and CAD/toolflow development.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Develop, integrate and release new features for high-performance place-and-route CAD flows.
  • Architect methodology and flow improvements to optimize power, performance and area.
  • Maintain, support and debug implementation flows; resolve project-specific tool and flow issues.
  • Collaborate with global CPU physical design teams to provide methodology guidance and flow support.
  • Work with EDA vendors to define tool roadmaps and resolve tool issues impacting delivery.
  • Perform timing sign-off, physical verification support and PDV activities as needed for delivery.
  • Write and review technical documentation and provide guidance or mentorship to other engineers.

Requirements

Must-have and preferred technical skills and experience.

  • Must-have: Hands-on experience developing and maintaining place-and-route CAD flows and tooling for high-performance silicon.
  • Must-have: Strong scripting and automation skills (Tcl and Python).
  • Must-have: Solid understanding of digital design, timing analysis, physical verification and flow debugging.
  • Must-have: Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams and with EDA vendors to diagnose and fix tool issues.
  • Nice-to-have: Experience with industry-standard P&R tools (for example, Cadence Innovus) and managing/regressing P&R flows.
  • Nice-to-have: Experience with advanced process nodes (5nm or below).
  • Nice-to-have: Proven track record of delivering class-leading PPA on complex CPU designs.

Education Requirements

Minimum qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field plus 6+ years of relevant engineering experience; OR Master's degree in those fields plus 5+ years; OR PhD plus 4+ years. The posting allows equivalent practical experience in lieu of the listed degrees.
