Sr. SDE - CPLD / FPGA

Role Summary

Senior individual contributor on the AWS Hardware Engineering team responsible for FPGA/CPLD programmable-logic development for server platforms. You will design, implement, verify, and validate FPGA logic and companion firmware, support deployment and fleet operations, and collaborate across architecture, hardware, validation, and software teams.

Experience Level

Senior β€” typically 8+ years of professional, non-internship software and hardware development experience (see Requirements for specific experience counts).

Responsibilities

Accountable for end-to-end FPGA programmable-logic features and related firmware, plus operational support and team mentorship.

  • Own architecture, design, estimation, implementation, verification, and validation of FPGA/CPLD features.
  • Develop and maintain companion embedded firmware that interfaces with programmable logic.
  • Lead technical work and guide other engineers to meet program milestones.
  • Deploy firmware/logic to fleets, monitor operations, debug production issues, and improve fleet health.
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to technical direction and process improvements.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with architecture, hardware, validation, and software teams and external partners.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and experience. Preferred items are listed separately.

  • Must-have: 8+ years of professional (non-internship) software/hardware development experience.
  • Must-have: 8+ years programming with at least one software language.
  • Must-have: 8+ years experience with hardware description languages (VHDL, Verilog, SystemVerilog).
  • Must-have: 5+ years leading design or architecture efforts (design patterns, reliability, scaling).
  • Must-have: Experience troubleshooting and debugging hardware and system-level issues.
  • Must-have: Experience developing firmware that interfaces with programmable logic and system operations.
  • Must-have: Experience mentoring, tech-leading, or directing engineering teams.
  • Nice-to-have: Experience across the full software development lifecycle, including code reviews, source control, build processes, testing, and operations; experience estimating and breaking down design tasks.

Education Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (or a related technical field) or equivalent practical experience.
