Job Title

Sr. Principal Engineer: Silicon Photonics - Hybrid Integration

Role Summary

Senior technical lead responsible for developing high-volume process flows that integrate III-V materials with silicon photonics to deliver manufacturable, high-yield photonic components for cloud, AI, and network applications. The role partners with photonic integrated circuit (PIC) development, wafer fabrication vendors, backend integration teams, and test engineering to define, validate, and optimize hybrid integration solutions.

Accommodation requests: talentacquisition@lumentum.com.

Experience Level

Senior. The posting specifies a senior/principal technical leadership role; no explicit years-of-experience range was provided.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include process development, cross-team integration, and verification to enable cost-effective high-volume manufacturing of hybrid-integrated silicon photonics.

  • Develop III‑V to silicon-photonics (SiPho) hybrid integration process flows and integrate novel III‑V components into PICs.
  • Collaborate with wafer fabrication partners and back-end process teams to ensure designs meet customer specifications and manufacturing tolerances.
  • Define test and verification plans with test engineering; analyze verification measurements and feed results back into process optimization.
  • Optimize device performance, yield, and cost for high-volume production.
  • Drive continuous improvement and foster cross-disciplinary communication between fabrication, design, and component development teams.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and experience follow; education requirements are summarized separately below.

  • Must-have: Solid background in optical physics and photonics and experience managing advanced IC and photonic IC integration methods (including 2D/2.5D/3D stacking approaches).
  • Proven experience with photonic device fabrication and analysis of test results, including common test methods for characterizing photonic chips.
  • Demonstrated aptitude for wafer fabrication or post-wafer process development and process integration.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; self-motivated and able to lead technical projects independently.
  • Excellent oral and written English communication and presentation skills.
  • Nice-to-have: Experience with photonics simulation techniques (FDTD, EME) and tools such as Lumerical or Synopsys; familiarity with photonic integrated circuit design flows, physical layout, and verification software.

Education Requirements

PhD in Electrical Engineering or Physics is specified, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience. Fields referenced: Electrical Engineering and Physics; equivalent practical experience is accepted.
