Job Title
Sr. FPGA Engineer
Role Summary
Design, test, and integrate FPGA-based digital signal processing and control algorithms for RF transmitter systems. Work closely with hardware and software engineers through prototype development, system integration, and installation.
Experience Level
Senior — requires 8+ years of relevant FPGA/DSP engineering experience.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include technical design, verification, and system integration of FPGA-based hardware and DSP algorithms.
- Define and document functional and system-level requirements.
- Design, simulate, and implement FPGA-based digital signal processing (including baseband processing).
- Design FPGA-based circuit card assemblies using schematic capture.
- Develop hardware prototypes; debug and test using oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, signal generators, logic analyzers, and similar instruments.
- Define and coordinate software tasks for hardware–software interfaces on FPGA cards.
- Design and implement chip-level and board-level test fixtures and test plans.
- Communicate technical status to project teams, management, and customers; report quality issues for corrective action.
Requirements
Key technical must-haves and preferred skills. Education degree details are summarized under Education Requirements below.
- Must be able to translate system-level requirements into FPGA architectures and solutions.
- Proficiency with Xilinx FPGA design flows (ISE and Vivado); VHDL design entry is essential.
- Experience with the full FPGA design flow: simulation, synthesis, implementation, and timing closure.
- Recent hands-on experience with Xilinx 7-series devices.
- Expertise in real-time DSP implementation on FPGAs: decimation/interpolation filters, fractional delay filters, asynchronous sample-rate conversion, NCO, Hilbert transforms, FFT, and waveform generation.
- Experience with FPGA hardware interfaces for RF sampling and waveform generation using A/D and D/A converters.
- Experience with version control systems and collaborative development workflows.
- Experience designing re-usable FPGA circuits and modules for multiple projects.
- Experience with high-speed memory and bus interfaces (PCIe, DDR3) and Linux host / PCIe endpoint interaction.
- Familiarity with digital signal processing hardware architectures and FMC-module interfacing to carrier cards.
- Familiarity with high-speed PCB layout considerations.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to obtain a DoD Secret clearance.
- Some travel is required.
Nice-to-have:
- Experience with RF system design for high-power or high-speed time-based communications.
- MATLAB/Simulink modeling experience to convert high-level models to FPGA implementations.
- High-level programming in C and ability to write simple Linux test applications for FPGA verification.
- Practical understanding of time synchronization standards (e.g. IEEE-1588).
Education Requirements
BS or MS in Electrical Engineering (specified). The posting requires 8+ years of relevant experience in addition to the degree.
