Software Verification Engineer (Co-op/Intern)
Role Summary
Student co-op/intern role in the R&D Software Design Verification team at Lumentum Ottawa. The role supports development and verification of automated test solutions for next-generation optical switches and contributes to product quality through test data analysis and failure characterization.
Available terms start January 2027: 4-month (Jan–Apr), preferred 8-month (Jan–Aug), or 12-month (Jan–Dec). Compensation range: $24–35/hr.
Experience Level
Entry-level — co-op / internship for current post-secondary students. Suitable for students with at least 2 years of undergraduate study in a technical program.
Responsibilities
Core responsibilities include developing and executing verification and automation activities, analyzing results, and working with cross-functional R&D teams.
- Develop and maintain automated test solutions for optical switch products.
- Collect, analyze, and report test data to improve product performance and quality.
- Troubleshoot and resolve software and system-level issues discovered during test.
- Work closely with Optical, Hardware, Firmware, Software, and Project teams to integrate test plans.
- Analyze and characterize device failures and contribute to corrective actions.
- Document test procedures, results, and known issues.
Requirements
Must-have technical and professional skills for successful contribution in the role.
- Strong object-oriented software design and implementation skills (any language).
- Strong problem solving and troubleshooting ability.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; able to work effectively in a team.
- Eligible to complete a background check as part of the hiring process.
Nice-to-have (assets):
- Experience with C#, Python, bash scripting, and Linux.
- Experience with instrumentation and test automation, and interfacing with devices under test and test equipment.
- Understanding of optical systems and photonics is an advantage.
Education Requirements
2+ years towards a bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics, Computer Science, or equivalent; candidates must be currently enrolled in a recognized Canadian post-secondary institution.
