Job Title

Software/Firmware Engineer

Role Summary

Develop, test, and support firmware/software for high-speed serial communication (SerDes) and data conversion IPs in Broadcom's custom silicon division. Work with hardware, verification, and systems teams to deliver reliable firmware, regression tests, CI/CD, and field support.

Experience Level

Senior - this role targets experienced engineers. See Education Requirements for the specific years-of-experience mappings provided in the posting.

Responsibilities

Primary duties include design, implementation, and operational support of firmware and system-level software.

  • Design, develop, test, and maintain firmware/software for high-speed serial communication and data conversion IPs.
  • Refactor and modernize legacy software to improve performance, scalability, and maintainability.
  • Develop and maintain regression test suites (e.g., using gtest) and automated test infrastructure.
  • Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines using Jenkins, Linux, and shell scripting.
  • Debug firmware/software on hardware platforms using lab equipment and RTL simulations; collaborate with cross-functional teams to resolve issues.
  • Optimize software for performance, reliability, and compatibility on Linux-based systems and administer local compute clusters.
  • Document code, processes, and system interfaces; support field-deployed systems and customer escalations.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills are listed below; preferred or nice-to-have items are indicated.

  • Proficiency in C/C++ with expertise in threading, network programming, and system-level development.
  • Strong firmware/software development experience across the full lifecycle and experience refactoring legacy code.
  • Experience developing and maintaining regression tests and automated test suites (e.g., gtest).
  • Linux system programming experience (kernel modules, drivers), bash scripting, and Jenkins CI/CD workflows.
  • Experience with Linux administration, system configuration, and troubleshooting.
  • Knowledge of high-speed SerDes and related protocols; ability to evaluate hardware-software tradeoffs.
  • Practical debugging skills for hardware-software interactions, including use of lab equipment and RTL simulations.
  • Experience with version control (e.g., Git) and issue tracking (e.g., Jira).
  • (Nice-to-have) Experience with serial interfaces (SPI, TWI, UART, USB) and scripting in Python for automation and test equipment control.
  • (Nice-to-have) Strong communication, documentation, and mentoring abilities; customer-focused problem solving under time constraints.

Education Requirements

Posting specifies degree-plus-experience mappings: BSEE with 8+ years, MSEE with 6+ years, or PhD with 3+ years of relevant industry experience. Fields referenced imply Electrical Engineering or closely related technical disciplines; equivalent practical experience is acceptable per the listing.
