Job Title
Software Engineer, Space
Role Summary
Design, implement, test, and operate flight and ground software for spacecraft and associated ground systems in the Space Special Programs team. Work cross-functionally with hardware, systems, operations, and mission teams to produce reliable, maintainable space-qualified software.
Experience Level
Mid-level β posting requests 2β8 years of professional software development experience.
Responsibilities
The role spans embedded and host-side software across flight, ground test, and ground station systems. Key responsibilities include:
- Implement and verify flight and ground software (embedded firmware and host applications).
- Rapidly prototype, test, and qualify software for space environments following space-flight design practices (fault detection/recovery, redundancy, error checking).
- Develop low- and high-level mission functionality interfacing with digital, analog, RF, and low-power hardware.
- Collaborate in peer and cross-discipline design reviews; integrate software with hardware and C2 systems.
- Perform bring-up, debugging, root-cause analysis, and data collection to support production and operations.
- Balance multiple concurrent projects and adjust deliverables to meet changing timelines.
Requirements
Must-have skills and clearances:
- 2β8 years professional experience in software product development (embedded and/or host-side).
- Embedded: ability to read VHDL and write C for low-level firmware; experience with toolchains and cross-platform compilers.
- Host-side: experience with GUIs, databases, and high-level languages for test and ground systems.
- Ability to read and interpret schematics and electronic circuits.
- Familiarity with interfaces and protocols: Ethernet, CAN, I2C, SPI, PCIe, MIPI CSI-2, etc.
- Familiarity with common MCU, CPU, and FPGA devices and development workflows.
- Knowledge of modern analog and digital electronics.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively on cross-functional teams.
- U.S. Citizenship required and ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Top Secret security clearance.
Nice-to-have:
- Experience with RF communications, machine learning, computer vision, or control algorithms in embedded environments.
- Prior experience with space-flight software standards and qualification processes.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a similar technical/engineering field is required.
