Software Engineer, Metal Runtime (API & Abstractions)
TenstorrentJob Title
Software Engineer, Metal Runtime (API & Abstractions)
Role Summary
Develop low-level runtime software and define host and device APIs that expose AI accelerator capabilities to the software stack. Work on performance-critical systems, runtime implementation, and API design close to the hardware.
The role sits on the Metal Runtime team and partners with runtime, kernel, compiler, and software teams to deliver scalable, production-ready interfaces.
Experience Level
Open to candidates at all seniority levels; final level and offer will be determined during the interview process.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include designing APIs and implementing runtime features that balance performance and usability.
- Design and evolve high-performance host and device APIs for the Metal Runtime.
- Create intuitive abstractions exposing low-level hardware capabilities without sacrificing performance.
- Implement runtime features, debug, and optimize performance across host and device.
- Collaborate with kernel, compiler, runtime, and software teams to integrate APIs across the stack.
- Drive API quality through design reviews, usability improvements, and maintainability efforts.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and constraints; nice-to-have items follow.
- Must-have: Strong C/C++ development experience focused on low-level systems programming.
- Experience with concurrency, processor/memory interaction, data movement, and performance-critical systems.
- Proven ability to design clean, maintainable APIs and abstractions with attention to developer experience.
- Practical experience debugging and optimizing runtime or systems-level code.
- Ability to collaborate across hardware, compiler, kernel, and higher-level software teams.
- Hiring constraint: Employment is contingent on eligibility to access U.S. export-controlled technology; candidates may need U.S. citizenship, permanent residency, or prior license approval.
- Nice-to-have: Experience with AI runtimes, compiler interfaces, kernel drivers, RISC-V or accelerator hardware.
Education Requirements
