Software Engineer Intern - Master's Degree

Role Summary

Internship on the firmware/software team building on-chip and system software for hardware security modules and networking/optical communications products. Work focuses on implementing and testing protocols, developing engineering utilities and automation, and building software prototypes for performance and scalability.

Experience Level

Entry-level internship intended for Master's degree students; no specific years of professional experience required.

Responsibilities

Key day-to-day responsibilities include:

  • Implement, integrate, and test network and cryptographic protocols using C/C++ and Python.
  • Develop engineering utilities and firmware to support embedded development, debugging, and evaluation of silicon.
  • Create and maintain unit tests, on-target tests, regression frameworks, and automation tools.
  • Prototype software and proof-of-concept implementations to evaluate performance and scalability.
  • Collaborate with silicon design, verification, and cross-functional engineering teams to support product development.
  • Conduct experiments and research on algorithms and models relevant to product features (including AI-related experiments where applicable).

Requirements

Must-have skills and qualifications:

  • Strong knowledge of computer networking fundamentals and practical tools such as ping, tcpdump, iPerf, and Wireshark.
  • Familiarity with embedded systems and Linux OS concepts, including firmware and OS-level behavior.
  • Proficiency in programming and scripting: C or C++, Python, and shell scripting (bash/perl).
  • Solid understanding of data structures and algorithms.
  • Experience or interest in test execution and automation support for software/firmware.
  • Good written and spoken English communication skills.
  • May require eligibility to access export-controlled technology; candidates may be subject to export license review.
  • Interview integrity: use of external AI tools during interviews is prohibited.

Nice-to-have:

  • Familiarity with ARM or RISC-V architectures.
  • Exposure to Rust, hardware security modules (HSM), cryptographic protocol implementation, or coherent optical communications concepts.
  • Experience prototyping AI algorithms or novel AI frameworks.

Education Requirements

Degree (in progress or completed), typically a Master’s degree, in Computer Networks, Communication Systems, Computer Science / Computer Science Engineering, or a closely related technical field.
