Software Engineer I

Role Summary

Join the RAIL team to develop the Radio Abstraction Interface Layer (RAIL) - embedded firmware that configures, controls, and optimizes wireless radios for Silicon Labs’ IoT SoCs. The role focuses on low-level firmware development and hardware/software integration to deliver reliable radio features across Bluetooth, proprietary wireless, and multiprotocol products.

Work closely with radio design, hardware, SDK, validation, and applications teams to bring new wireless products and features to market.

Experience Level

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include developing, testing, and debugging embedded firmware and collaborating across engineering teams.

  • Develop and maintain embedded software features for wireless radio platforms.
  • Design, implement, test, and debug firmware in C/C++ for resource-constrained microcontrollers.
  • Support radio-control capabilities: transmit, receive, power management, timing, and diagnostics.
  • Investigate software and hardware integration issues using debuggers, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and other lab tools.
  • Contribute to code reviews, technical documentation, automated testing, and continuous improvement of development processes.
  • Collaborate with hardware, radio design, SDK, validation, and applications teams to deliver products and features.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and abilities.

  • Strong interest in embedded software, wireless communications, and low-level system development.
  • Academic or project experience programming embedded systems in C or C++.
  • Understanding of wireless communication fundamentals (RF, modulation, packet-based communication, or digital signal processing).
  • Familiarity with microcontrollers, embedded peripherals, interrupts, memory-constrained systems, and real-time concepts.
  • Proven problem-solving and debugging skills; experience with JTAG/SWD, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, or protocol analyzers.
  • Ability to learn complex technical systems, translate requirements into well-tested software, and communicate effectively in a collaborative engineering environment.

Nice-to-have:

  • Internship, co-op, research, or project experience in embedded firmware, wireless systems, or IoT devices.
  • Bare-metal embedded development experience; RTOS concepts; device drivers; bootloaders; power optimization; embedded security.
  • Exposure to Bluetooth Low Energy, Zigbee, Thread, Wi‑Fi, proprietary wireless protocols, or multiprotocol systems.
  • Experience with Python or other scripting languages for test automation and tooling; familiarity with Git, CI/CD workflows, unit testing, and hardware-in-the-loop testing.
  • Participation in engineering competitions, technical organizations, or research publications.

Education Requirements

Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field is listed as the minimum qualification.
