Software Development and Optimization Internship
Role Summary
Internship on the optiSLang development team focusing on research and implementation of optimization algorithms, metamodeling techniques, and associated tooling.
This is a full-time, in-office 6-month internship in Lyon, France starting January 2027; work includes algorithm prototyping, integration into software libraries, and benchmarking on engineering examples.
Experience Level
Internship / Entry-level — targeted at students in the final years of a Master's program. No specific years-of-experience required.
Responsibilities
Primary tasks and deliverables:
- Research optimization and metamodeling methods and translate findings into software solutions.
- Implement algorithmic prototypes in C++ and Python and integrate them into existing libraries.
- Create test cases and automated benchmarking scripts to evaluate algorithm performance on real examples.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams: participate in planning, gather requirements, and document and present results.
- Experiment with numerical methods, machine learning techniques, and statistical analysis using simulation inputs.
Requirements
Core technical skills and attributes expected from candidates (must-haves unless noted):
- Familiarity with numerical methods and an interest in optimization, machine learning, and statistics.
- Proficient in C++ and Python; experience developing software on Windows and/or Linux.
- Experience with surrogate modeling tools and ML frameworks such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, Scikit-learn, Matlab, or equivalent (nice-to-have).
- Experience using computational libraries such as NumPy, SciPy, and pandas.
- Good written and verbal communication in English.
- Problem-solving mindset and willingness to learn by doing.
Education Requirements
Currently pursuing a Master's degree (MSc) in Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or Computer Science; ideally in the final year of the program.
