Job Title

SoC Architect

Role Summary

Join AMD's Adaptive and Embedded Computing Group (AECG) to define next-generation adaptive and embedded SoC architectures. The role focuses on I/O subsystems (PCIe, CXL, UAL), DMA, and interactions with embedded processors, NoC, memory controllers and FPGA fabric across applications such as embedded computing, AI/ML, data center, communications, automotive and aerospace.

Location: San Jose, CA (hybrid).

Experience Level

Mid-level. Specific years of experience not stated; role expects experienced SoC/I/O architecture background.

Responsibilities

The SoC Architect will define and drive I/O and DMA subsystem architectures and collaborate with customers and cross-functional teams to meet PPA and schedule targets.

  • Drive SoC architecture with emphasis on I/O subsystems connected over PCIe, UAL, or CXL.
  • Define I/O subsystem and PCIe DMA architectures and their interactions with embedded processor subsystems, NoC, memory controllers, and FPGA fabric.
  • Create flexible, modular I/O subsystem architectures suitable for chiplet, monolithic or 3D form factors.
  • Work with customers and cross-functional teams to scope requirements and analyze PPA trade-offs.
  • Specify hardware, software, and firmware interfaces between DMA/I/O subsystems and embedded processors and external hosts.
  • Author clear architecture specifications and guide pre-silicon design/verification and post-silicon validation.
  • Collaborate with product planning, IP architects, design and verification teams to align architecture to product goals.

Requirements

Core technical skills and practical experience required for successful execution. Preferred items are listed separately.

Must-have:

  • Proven experience architecting SoC I/O subsystems and DMA architectures.
  • Strong knowledge of PCIe protocol and typical device implementations (mandatory and optional features).
  • Experience defining interactions between I/O/DMA and embedded processor subsystems (x86, RISC-V, or ARM) and external host CPUs.
  • Ability to author concise architecture specifications and support design/verification and validation phases.
  • Customer-facing skills to gather requirements and translate them into architecture requirements that meet PPA and schedule targets.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States; this role is not eligible for visa sponsorship.

Nice-to-have / Preferred:

  • Domain experience in embedded computing, aerospace & defense, data-center, networking, or automotive.
  • Familiarity with bridging and ordering enforcement between on-chip protocols (e.g., AXI) and off-chip protocols (e.g., PCIe).
  • Knowledge of ARM processors, AXI interconnects, FPGA design, and AI/ML accelerators.
  • Experience with boot, security, debug, telemetry, and RAS considerations.

Education Requirements

BS, MS or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field.
