SiPh Package Reliability Engineer
GlobalFoundriesJob Title
SiPh Package Reliability Engineer
Role Summary
The Package Reliability Engineer develops and executes reliability methodology and qualification for silicon photonics products and advanced optical packages. The role evaluates reliability across chip-to-package, fiber-to-chip and related electrical, thermal and mechanical interfaces and works with device, package development, assembly, test, product, quality, manufacturing and customer teams.
Experience Level
Senior level - the posting specifies experience equivalencies that indicate a senior role (e.g., Bachelor's + ≥7 years, Master's + ≥5 years).
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include:
- Define package-level reliability strategy and translate product use conditions into qualification plans and acceptance criteria.
- Design and execute reliability tests: temperature cycling, high-temperature storage, humidity (biased/unbiased), mechanical shock and vibration, fiber pull, optical power aging, and combined-stress tests.
- Identify and prioritize failure mechanisms across optical, electrical, mechanical, thermal, and material interfaces.
- Develop and apply physics-of-failure acceleration models and lifetime projections; analyze reliability data using Weibull/lognormal and censored-data methods.
- Support failure analysis, root-cause investigations, corrective actions, and verification testing with cross-functional teams.
- Provide design guidance, risk assessments, and prepare qualification reports, technical specifications, and customer-facing summaries.
- Plan and manage reliability hardware, fixtures, test capabilities, and external laboratory support to meet program schedules.
- Support manufacturing excursions, yield or field-return investigations, and comply with Environmental, Health, Safety & Security requirements.
Requirements
Must-have skills and experience:
- Proven experience in reliability qualification, methodology development, or failure-mechanism investigations for packages, semiconductors, photonics, or optoelectronic products.
- Strong knowledge of reliability physics and accelerated testing for semiconductor and photonic devices and material interfaces.
- Experience interpreting optical, electrical, mechanical, thermal, and material characterization data and relating observations to physical failure mechanisms.
- Experience with reliability statistics, lifetime projection, experiment design, and technical risk assessment.
- Ability to work effectively with global cross-functional teams and clearly communicate technical conclusions to technical and non-technical stakeholders in English.
- Employment is conditioned upon successful completion of applicable background checks and drug screening.
Nice-to-have:
- Hands-on knowledge of silicon photonics components (waveguides, modulators, photodetectors, grating/edge couplers), fiber arrays, and optical attach processes.
- Experience with advanced optical packaging, co-packaged optics, heterogeneous integration, adhesives/underfills, and solder/interconnect reliability.
- Familiarity with JEDEC, Telcordia, IEC, or customer-specific qualification frameworks.
- Experience with FEA, thermal-mechanical modeling, fracture mechanics, or optical alignment tolerance analysis.
- Experience with failure-analysis techniques (cross-sectioning, microscopy, X-ray/CT, SAM, spectroscopy) and statistical/analysis tools (JMP, Minitab, Python, R, MATLAB).
Education Requirements
Required: Bachelor's degree in Photonics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Applied Physics, or a related engineering/physical science discipline. The posting specifies experience equivalencies: Bachelor's + ≥7 years, Master's + ≥5 years, or a Ph.D. in a relevant field. Preferred: Master’s or Ph.D.
