Job Title

Silicon Photonics Intern

Role Summary

Join the Optical Interconnect team to develop silicon photonics devices and integrated circuits for high-speed optical links used in data center and cloud applications. The role covers device design, simulation, modeling, characterization, and cross-functional integration with packaging, test and product teams.

This position may require eligibility to access export-controlled technology and could be subject to export license review.

Experience Level

Internship / entry-level - intended for students. PhD students are preferred; no specific years of industry experience required.

Responsibilities

Typical responsibilities include:

  • Design, simulate and model silicon photonic devices (modulators, photodetectors, waveguides, couplers, filters) and high-speed optical interfaces.
  • Work with industry-standard photonic integrated circuit design flows and evaluate design trade-offs and constraints.
  • Support characterization and validation of photonic devices; correlate measurements with simulation and models.
  • Analyze data, prepare results, and present findings to technical and cross-functional audiences.
  • Collaborate with design, packaging, test and product teams to support device integration and verification.

Requirements

Minimum technical requirements and preferred skills.

Must-have:

  • Solid understanding of semiconductor optical devices (modulators, detectors, lasers, waveguide devices) or semiconductor packaging/integration technology (signal/power integrity, heterogeneous integration, mechanical/assembly processes).
  • Familiarity with optical simulation software tools and/or optical device modeling.
  • Ability to analyze data and present results to diverse audiences.

Preferred / nice-to-have:

  • Experience with Python or MATLAB for data analysis and automation.
  • Hands-on experience with optical laboratory measurements and characterization.

Education Requirements

Student in a Ph.D. degree program in Electrical Engineering, Photonics, Physics, Optical Engineering or a related field.
