Silicon Photonics Characterization Engineer
Role Summary
Measure and characterize integrated photonic devices, circuits and subsystems to support product development and manufacturing qualification. Build and operate optical measurement setups and develop software for automated data acquisition and device control.
The role works within the silicon photonics characterization/test team and partners closely with design engineers, external measurement partners, and suppliers to evaluate performance and diagnose root causes.
Experience Level
Entry-level — 1+ years of relevant industrial experience.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include:
- Perform detailed measurements of integrated photonic devices, circuits and subsystems.
- Develop, build, and operate customized optical measurement setups.
- Develop scripts and software for photonic circuit initialization, control, and automated data acquisition.
- Work closely with the design team to enable comprehensive performance evaluation and root-cause analysis.
- Coordinate with offsite measurement partners and external suppliers as needed.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of characterization techniques and measurement methodologies.
Requirements
Must-have skills and experience:
- At least 1 year of relevant industrial experience in photonics or related testing roles.
- Strong fundamentals in physics, electromagnetics, and integrated optics.
- Hands-on experience in characterization and measurement of integrated photonic circuits.
- Programming and data analysis skills using MATLAB, LabVIEW, and/or Python.
- Solid understanding of silicon photonics fabrication, packaging, and testing methods.
Nice-to-have:
- Experience with high-speed photonic device characterization.
Education Requirements
BSc or MSc in Electronics and Communication Engineering or a relevant discipline with focus on Silicon Photonics or Integrated Optics.
