Silicon Photonic Design Engineer
Role Summary
The Silicon Photonic Design Engineer will develop silicon-photonics components, circuits, and optical engines for high-bandwidth AI and data-center systems. The role sits on an engineering team in Adliswil/Zürich focused on design, simulation, layout, tape-out, and characterization of photonic integrated circuits.

Entry-level (2+ years of relevant research or engineering experience preferred)
Responsibilities
Core responsibilities include design, verification, fabrication support, and test of photonic devices and assemblies.
- Simulate and design active and passive photonic integrated components, circuits, and high-bandwidth photonic systems.
- Translate device operational specifications into mask layouts.
- Drive tape-out activities including layout verification, DRC, and documentation.
- Contribute to software development and maintenance for simulation and mask layout tools, including PDK.
- Test and characterize components and integrated circuits; perform qualification and high-speed measurements.
- Analyze measurement data, compare experimental results with simulations, and optimize device performance.
- Perform root cause and failure analysis on components and integrated circuits.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills, relevant experience, and preferred additional capabilities.
- 2+ years of experience in a relevant research or engineering environment; industry experience in high-tech development is a plus.
- Strong understanding of silicon photonics, semiconductor physics, optical component design, fabrication, and testing.
- Hands-on experience in photonic device characterization and testing; high-speed testing background preferred.
- In-depth experience in at least two of the following areas:
- Photonic electromagnetic field simulations (Lumerical preferred).
- RF PCB design and RF electromagnetic field simulation (HFSS preferred).
- Code-based mask layout design for photonic ICs (Synopsys preferred), experience with external PDKs, libraries, and DRC; tape-out experience with multiple foundries is a plus.
- Strong analytical skills for measurement interpretation and troubleshooting; experience with >40 GHz electro-optical characterization is a plus.
- Soft skills: proactive, self-starting, adaptable, clear communicator, and able to work cross-functionally in a global team.
Education Requirements
Master's degree and/or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Photonics, or a related technical field.
