Job Title
Silicon Debug Engineer
Role Summary
Hands-on engineer supporting Maia and Cobalt silicon programs within Microsoft Silicon, Cloud Hardware, and Infrastructure Engineering (SCHIE). Focus is on silicon debug, failure analysis, and readiness of debug and FA tools to enable high-quality, high-volume manufacturing for cloud hardware.
Experience Level
Mid-level. Typical experience expectations: 1+ years with a relevant Master's degree or 2+ years with a relevant Bachelor's degree; preferred 3+ years in integrated circuit development, silicon debug, or test engineering.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include:
- Execute hands-on silicon debug, fault isolation (FI), and failure analysis (FA) activities across product bring-up and manufacturing flows.
- Develop and maintain silicon debug methodologies and test content for manufacturing and product engineering yield improvement.
- Prepare, qualify, and ensure readiness of physical and electrical debug tools and FA equipment.
- Perform root-cause analysis of product issues, circuit marginalities, and special circuit failures; translate findings into corrective actions for design, design methodology, or test flow.
- Use ATE and analytical equipment to isolate failures and validate fixes.
- Lead sub-projects, coordinate cross-functional teams, and manage external vendors to deliver debug and manufacturing readiness milestones.
Requirements
Must-have and preferred skills and qualifications.
-
Must-have: Hands-on experience in semiconductor silicon debug, fault isolation, failure analysis, and product engineering yield debug.
-
Must-have: Practical experience using ATE and analytical test equipment for failure isolation.
-
Must-have: Deep knowledge of silicon debug tools and debug methodologies.
-
Must-have: Strong project leadership and cross-functional collaboration skills; experience managing external vendors.
-
Must-have: Ability to meet Microsoft security screening requirements, including the Microsoft Cloud Background Check and export-control eligibility verification (proof of citizenship or lawful residency as required).
-
Nice-to-have: Experience developing integrated circuits (pre-silicon, first-silicon bring-up, new product introduction) and building debug methodology solutions for complex SoCs in advanced process nodes.
-
Nice-to-have: Experience with system-level debug and correlation to ATE, DFT/DFM techniques, probability & statistics (DOE), and device physics background.
Education Requirements
Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field plus 1+ year of technical engineering experience; OR Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field plus 2+ years of technical engineering experience; OR equivalent practical experience.
