Job Title
Embedded Software Engineer
Role Summary
Develop embedded firmware for Reality Labs Research display prototypes, driving display pipelines, bringing up custom hardware, and coordinating real-time subsystems across MCU/SoC, FPGA, and wearable power-optimized architectures.
Work on low-level firmware, display controller configuration, and system integration in a research and prototyping environment while collaborating with firmware, software, and hardware teams.
Experience Level
Mid-level β typically 5+ years of embedded software development experience (or 3+ years with an M.S.).
Responsibilities
Design, implement, and debug firmware for display subsystems and prototype platforms; support hardware bring-up and integrate firmware with adjacent systems.
- Develop and debug firmware for display controllers, display pipeline configuration, and timing/synchronization of light engines.
- Implement firmware on microcontrollers and SoCs: peripheral bring-up, boot loaders, power management, and RTOS task scheduling.
- Support firmware on FPGA-based prototyping systems (video input interfaces, display driving logic) when applicable.
- Participate in hardware development phases: architecture definition, component selection, proof-of-concept firmware, and board bring-up.
- Collaborate cross-functionally to make architectural trade-offs and ensure platform integration with other subsystems.
- Maintain documentation, track requirements, and communicate technical findings to diverse audiences.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills first, followed by relevant preferred skills.
-
Must-have: 5+ years embedded software development experience (or 3+ years with an M.S.).
-
Must-have: Proficiency in C/C++ and experience building drivers for custom hardware systems.
-
Must-have: Hands-on hardware debugging (oscilloscope, logic analyzer, protocol decoders) and register-level system debugging.
-
Must-have: Experience designing firmware from datasheets, including implementing synchronous/asynchronous serial protocols.
-
Must-have: Experience with real-time operating systems (e.g., Zephyr, FreeRTOS, or equivalent).
-
Preferred: SoC bring-up experience (ARM Cortex-A/M, Qualcomm, or similar) and MCU/SoC-level system integration.
-
Preferred: Experience integrating embedded software with FPGA-based platforms and FPGA-based prototyping.
-
Preferred: Display subsystem experience (display controllers, LED/laser drivers, timing engines) and familiarity with video processing concepts.
-
Preferred: Experience with display interfaces and protocols (MIPI DSI/DPHY, DisplayPort, LVDS/OpenLDI).
-
Preferred: Experience in fast-paced research/prototyping environments and working across cross-site/cross-functional teams; familiarity with AI-assisted development tools is a plus.
Education Requirements
B.S. in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field β or equivalent practical experience β is indicated in the posting. An M.S. in a related field (or equivalent experience) is listed as preferred.
