Signal Processing Engineer
Role Summary
Design and optimize digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms for on-chip and embedded implementation on custom SoCs used to sense and process neural signals. The role works closely with SoC, Firmware, and Machine Learning teams to convert algorithm requirements into hardware-friendly implementations under constraints on power, latency, area, and throughput.
Experience Level
Mid-level. The role expects approximately 3+ years of relevant experience in digital signal processing algorithm development or shipping products with embedded/hardware-constrained implementations.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include algorithm development, hardware mapping, and collaboration with digital design teams.
- Design and develop DSP algorithms for sensing neural activity (e.g., spike detection) and monitoring electrode health.
- Create numerical methods such as custom compression to improve radio throughput.
- Develop fixed-point or quantized algorithm variants optimized for constrained hardware.
- Prototype and verify algorithms in high-level languages and prepare hardware-friendly representations.
- Perform algorithm-to-architecture mapping, analyzing trade-offs among accuracy, latency, power, and resource use.
- Collaborate with digital design to define micro-architectures, dataflow, pipelining, and parallelization for on-chip pipelines.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience; preferred items listed separately.
- 3+ years of experience in digital signal processing algorithm development or product development with embedded/hardware constraints.
- Strong fundamentals in analog and digital signal processing and numerical methods.
- Familiarity with fixed-point arithmetic, quantization effects, and numerical precision trade-offs.
- Proficiency in Python and C for algorithm prototyping and simulation.
- Ability to map algorithms to hardware with attention to latency, power, and area.
Nice-to-have
- Hands-on experience with Verilog or VHDL and transitioning algorithms to RTL.
- Experience with dedicated DSP cores, accelerators, or custom SoC design.
- Proven record of optimizing for power, area, and latency in constrained environments.
Education Requirements
BS, MS, or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Signal Processing, or a related field.
