Role Summary

Join Microchip's Frequency and Timing Systems Business Unit in San Jose as a Senior Technical Staff Embedded Systems Software Engineer. You will develop platform and technology building blocks for network timing and synchronization products, focusing on embedded Linux-based systems and hardware-software integration.

Travel up to 0–25%.

Senior-level — minimum 15 years of experience in embedded platform software development.

Responsibilities

Design, implement, and optimize software for embedded Linux devices and support hardware bring-up and integration.

  • Develop and maintain pre-loader, U-Boot bootloader, and Linux kernel modules and drivers for new hardware platforms.
  • Design and deliver Linux kernel drivers for peripherals, including custom Ethernet drivers.
  • Perform board bring-up and hardware-software integration for ARM-based systems.
  • Troubleshoot, analyze, and resolve complex technical issues; use debugging tools to diagnose system-level faults.
  • Collaborate with hardware engineering, QA, operations, and global teams to align technical strategy and drive delivery.
  • Prepare design documentation and functional specifications for new software modules.

Requirements

Must-have skills and experience for the role.

  • Strong hands-on experience with Linux kernel internals and peripheral driver development (Ethernet, Flash, SPI, I²C, UART).
  • Experience customizing U-Boot and porting the Linux kernel across embedded platforms.
  • Board bring-up experience on ARM-based systems.
  • Expertise in networking software and IP protocols; knowledge of IPv4/IPv6, VLANs, routing, and firewall concepts.
  • Proficient in C and shell scripting; strong understanding of OS coding techniques (processes, threads, interrupts).
  • Experience with Yocto build system.
  • Strong debugging skills with tools such as GDB and Lauterbach.
  • U.S. export control requirement: must provide proof of U.S. citizenship, permanent residency, or protected status as defined in 8 USC 1324b(a)(3).

Nice-to-have:

  • Familiarity with NXP QorIQ Layerscape processors.
  • Familiarity with PCI Express controllers and bus specifications.

Education Requirements

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electronics Engineering, or a related technical field. The role specifies a minimum of 15 years of experience developing embedded platform software.
