Senior Technical Staff Engineer - Software

Role Summary

Senior embedded software engineer responsible for platform and technology building blocks for network timing and synchronization products. Role is on the Development team based in Santa Rosa or San Jose, CA and focuses on Linux-based embedded systems, bootloader/kernel bring-up, and device driver development.

Responsibilities

Primary engineering responsibilities and cross-functional tasks:

  • Design, develop, and optimize embedded Linux software for scalable devices and systems.
  • Develop, customize, and maintain Pre-loader, U-Boot bootloader, and Linux kernel modules for new hardware platforms.
  • Design and deliver Linux kernel drivers for peripherals, including custom Ethernet drivers.
  • Perform board bring-up for new ARM-based hardware and support hardware-software integration.
  • Collaborate with hardware engineering, QA, operations, and global teams to define technical strategy and resolve issues.
  • Troubleshoot, analyze, and resolve complex technical problems; prepare design documentation and functional specifications.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills, experience, and eligibility:

  • Minimum 15 years developing embedded platform software.
  • Hands-on experience with Linux kernel internals and peripheral driver development (Ethernet, Flash, SPI, I2C, UART).
  • Experience customizing U-Boot and porting the Linux kernel across embedded platforms.
  • Board bring-up experience on ARM-based systems.
  • Strong IP protocols and networking software knowledge; IPv4/IPv6, VLANs, routing, and firewall concepts.
  • Proficient in C and shell scripting; strong OS coding techniques (processes, threads, interrupts).
  • Debugging experience with tools such as GDB and Lauterbach; experience with Yocto build framework.
  • U.S. export-control eligibility: must provide proof of U.S. citizenship, permanent residency, or protected individual status as defined by U.S. law.

Nice-to-have:

  • Familiarity with NXP QorIQ Layerscape processors.
  • Experience with PCI Express controllers and bus specifications.

Education Requirements

Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Electronics Engineering, or a related technical field is specified in the posting. The role also specifies a minimum of 15 years of embedded platform software development experience.
