Senior System Software Engineer, GPU Firmware
NVIDIAJob Title
Senior System Software Engineer, GPU Firmware
Role Summary
Develop and maintain firmware and boot software for NVIDIA GPUs, focusing on secure, resource-constrained boot-time environments. Work with hardware, OS and PC vendors, and other software teams to design, implement, and validate firmware features that support GPU lifecycle, security, and manageability.
Experience Level
Senior; typically requires 5+ years of experience developing device BIOS, firmware, or other low-level software.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include designing, implementing, and improving GPU boot and firmware components, collaborating across hardware and software teams, and maintaining firmware security and infrastructure.
- Design, develop, test, debug, and optimize GPU firmware across the GPU lifecycle.
- Create and implement boot software solutions within tight time and storage constraints.
- Collaborate with hardware designers and OS/PC vendors to deliver interoperable startup and management features.
- Improve firmware security (root of trust, flash/boot security) and perform secure software evaluations.
- Enhance team infrastructure such as build systems and regression farms.
- Define and improve control-plane and management interfaces for GPUs.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience for immediate contribution.
- 5+ years’ experience developing device BIOS, firmware, or other low-level software.
- Strong C programming skills and low-level systems debugging experience.
- Solid understanding of secure software fundamentals: cryptography, authentication/attestation, chains of trust, and common software security vulnerabilities.
- Deep understanding of software development processes and firmware lifecycle.
- Effective communication and collaboration skills; ability to work cross-functionally with hardware and software teams.
- Ability to design solutions under tight boot-time and storage constraints.
Nice-to-have:
- Experience with x86 assembly and in-depth PC architecture knowledge.
- Experience with RISC-V or other microarchitectures.
- Familiarity with PCI/PCIe architecture.
- Experience with protocols such as MCTP, PLDM, SPDM.
- Experience developing in UEFI environments.
Education Requirements
BS or MS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field - or equivalent practical experience.
