Senior Staff Optical Test Engineer

Role Summary

Senior Staff Test Engineer on the Marvell Optics PTE team in Hsinchu, responsible for developing and sustaining optical subassembly test solutions from NPI through high-volume manufacturing. The role focuses on hardware and hands-on test development for silicon photonics, pluggable transceivers, light engines, and co-packaged optics, with cross-functional interaction across design, packaging, and process groups.

Experience Level

Senior-level. Typically requires 8+ years' relevant experience with a BS or 5+ years with an MS in the relevant technical fields (see Education Requirements).

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include developing test methodologies, building automated test stations, and supporting product ramp to volume manufacturing.

• Develop and optimize optical and electrical test methodologies (e.g., IV, TIA/DRV behavior, MZM control, PD characterization).
• Design, set up, and maintain automated and semi-automated optical/electrical test stations and fixtures.
• Implement equipment automation and test control for production environments.
• Define test requirements and ensure design-for-test (DfT) alignment with design, packaging, and process teams.
• Support test readiness for NPI and mass production ramp.
• Work with external vendors, contract manufacturers, and failure analysis teams to resolve issues and improve yield and test quality.
• Document test processes, procedures, and technical learnings clearly and maintain test documentation.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and experience for the role.

• Hands-on experience with optical and electrical test equipment: source-measure units (SMU), optical switches, optical spectrum analyzers (OSA), tunable lasers, polarization controllers, and test fixturing/jigs.
• Experience in equipment automation and control for production test stations.
• Proficiency with scripting or programming for test automation (examples: Python, C++, LabVIEW, Visual Basic); experience in production-level automation is highly valued.
• Familiarity with photonics components and concepts: waveguides, modulators, photodetectors, tunable lasers, and fiber coupling techniques.
• Experience supporting NPI and mass-production test ramps, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to define and refine test requirements.
• Strong problem-solving skills and experience working with vendors and contract manufacturers on test equipment and process issues.

Nice-to-have:

• Prior experience with silicon photonics test development or high-volume optical assembly test.
• Experience with test data analysis, statistical process control, or test yield improvement projects.

Education Requirements

BS degree with 8+ years' experience or MS degree with 5+ years' experience in silicon photonics, optics, electrical engineering, physics, or a closely related technical field. (Source lists these degree-and-experience combinations explicitly.)
