Senior Staff Firmware Engineer

Role Summary

Join the Ethernet PHY SerDes firmware team to design, implement and debug embedded firmware and host utilities for high-speed PAM4 transceivers. The role focuses on firmware development for an embedded processor, test infrastructure, and interoperability/debugging across hardware and software.

Responsibilities

Work on embedded firmware and related host tools, tests, and debugging to support high-speed transceiver development and verification.

  • Develop and debug portable C firmware and C/Python host utilities, GUIs, regression and simulation tools.
  • Design feature implementations that are scalable, maintainable, and mergeable.
  • Participate in code reviews, manage issue-tracking (Jira), and follow team coding guidelines.
  • Create utilities to aid embedded development, debugging, diagnostics, and test automation.
  • Develop and maintain test infrastructure, test scripts, and data-analysis tools.
  • Perform cross-vendor interoperability testing and hardware/software debugging.
  • Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve issues to meet standards and performance requirements.

Requirements

Key qualifications and technical skills required and preferred for successful performance in the role.

Must-have:

  • Minimum 4+ years of relevant firmware/software experience.
  • Strong C programming skills for embedded targets; solid Python for tooling and tests.
  • Experience with embedded microprocessors (ARM Cortex).
  • Familiarity with Git source control and build/release procedures.
  • Ability to follow established coding guidelines and practices.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Nice-to-have / Preferred:

  • Experience using state machines to architect embedded C code.
  • Firmware architecture, integration, and test experience for digital signal processing systems.
  • Bootloader design and RTOS implementation experience.
  • Full firmware development lifecycle experience: spec, design, integration, test.
  • Hardware troubleshooting skills and familiarity with oscilloscopes, ICE, spectrum/network analyzers.
  • Python-based GUI development experience.
  • Experience with Ethernet protocols and physical-layer devices; Verilog proficiency is a plus.

Education Requirements

BS required; MS preferred in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field (as stated in the minimum qualifications).

This role may require access to export-controlled technology; applicants must be eligible to access such information under applicable U.S. export control laws. The position is eligible for Marvell's bonus and equity plans.
