Job Title
Senior/Staff Design Engineer
Role Summary
Responsible for RTL development and microarchitecture of AI-enabled RISC-V CPU cores, including vector and matrix engines. Accountable for functional features, performance, power, and area across design, verification, and integration.
Position sits within the CPU/IP design team (MIPS) at a semiconductor foundry working on high-performance, AI-enabled processors.
Experience Level
Senior-level. Posting indicates experience guidance of Bachelor's with 3β7 years or Master's with 2β5 years.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities focus on microarchitecture, RTL development, verification support, and cross-functional integration.
- Drive microarchitecture and design of critical CPU core blocks.
- Develop RTL for RISC-V vector CPU core and custom extensions.
- Design AI-enabled matrix engine to augment vector processing.
- Perform high-level architectural exploration, microarchitectural research, and detailed specification.
- Configure and refine RTL to meet power, performance, area, and timing targets.
- Support functional verification and contribute to verification strategy and performance verification.
- Collaborate with modeling, physical design, and SoC teams on timing, area, reliability, testability, and power validation.
- Comply with environmental, health, safety, and security requirements.
Requirements
Must-have and preferred technical skills.
Must-have:
- Knowledge of pipeline stages in in-order or out-of-order CPU cores and microprocessor architecture.
- Familiarity with instruction fetch/decode, branch prediction, scheduling, register renaming, reorder buffer (ROB), out-of-order execution, integer/FPU execution, load/store, prefetch, vector datapaths, caches, and memory subsystems.
- Proficiency in SystemVerilog, Verilog, and/or VHDL.
- Experience with simulators and waveform debugging tools.
- Understanding of logic design principles and timing and power implications.
Nice-to-have:
- Experience designing RISC-V, ARM, and/or MIPS CPUs.
- Experience with hardware multithreading, virtualization, SIMD, and vector/matrix-enabled CPUs.
- Familiarity with low-power microarchitecture techniques and high-performance trade-offs.
- Experience with scripting languages such as Perl or Python.
- Knowledge of cache coherency, memory consistency, SoC integration, safety, and security microarchitecture.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree (posting specifies Bachelor's with 3β7 years of experience) or Master's degree (posting specifies Master's with 2β5 years of experience). Fields of study are not specified in the posting.
