Senior/Staff Application Engineer - Physical Design
Role Summary
Provide technical support and engineering solutions for advanced ASIC Physical Design implementation flows. Work with semiconductor customers to debug, optimize, and improve implementation methodologies and to deploy Synopsys physical design tools.
Experience Level
Senior-level. The role expects approximately 5+ years of experience in ASIC Physical Design, Design Implementation, or Application Engineering.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities involve customer-facing engineering, debugging, and methodology delivery across the physical implementation flow.
- Provide technical support to customers using Synopsys Physical Design tools (Fusion Compiler, ICC2) and related flows.
- Debug customer designs, reproduce issues, analyze root causes, and propose fixes or methodology changes.
- Optimize physical implementation for timing, area, and power (PPA) across floorplanning, placement, CTS, routing, and timing closure.
- Collaborate with global Application Engineering and R&D teams to deliver solutions and software updates.
- Deliver technical presentations, trainings, methodology reviews, and knowledge-transfer sessions.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience required for the role; nice-to-have items listed separately.
- Must-have: 5+ years experience in ASIC Physical Design, Design Implementation, or Application Engineering.
- Must-have: Hands-on experience with Synopsys Fusion Compiler and/or IC Compiler II (ICC2).
- Must-have: Strong knowledge of floorplanning, placement, CTS, routing, timing closure, DRC/LVS closure, and PPA optimization.
- Must-have: Familiarity with STA, extraction, physical verification, and signoff methodologies.
- Must-have: Scripting proficiency (Tcl, Perl, Python, or Shell) and strong debugging/problem-solving skills.
- Must-have: Customer-facing experience and strong English communication skills.
- Nice-to-have: Experience with PrimeTime, StarRC, IC Validator (ICV), DSO.ai, or other AI-driven optimization tools.
