Job Title
Senior Specialist, FPGA Engineer
Role Summary
Design and deliver FPGA-based hardware and associated firmware for Electronic Safe and Arm Devices (fuzes) used in DoD weapon systems. Work within an electrical engineering team to define architecture, implement FPGA logic, verify designs, and integrate microcontroller firmware.
Schedule: 4/10 (ten-hour days, four days per week). Relocation assistance available.
Experience Level
Senior β typically requires 6+ years of relevant experience with a Bachelor's degree, 4+ years with a graduate degree, or 10+ years of equivalent experience without a degree.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include architecture, design, implementation, verification, and debugging of FPGA and related hardware/firmware.
- Define architecture and implement FPGA logic (Verilog) for antifuse and enhanced Flash FPGAs.
- Create and execute verification plans using SystemVerilog/UVM or equivalent methodologies.
- Develop embedded firmware in C for microcontrollers; occasional C# development for enhanced Flash microcontrollers.
- Design and integrate sensor interfaces, A/D and D/A, communication protocols, state machines, and timer chains.
- Perform hardware/firmware debug and performance profiling in lab and target environments using logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, JTAG/ICE, and protocol analyzers.
- Contribute to process and quality improvements (code reviews, unit testing, prototyping, product testing).
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience; preferred items listed separately.
- Proven experience using Verilog for FPGA/logic design and familiarity with digital design principles and HDL workflows.
- Embedded C programming experience: algorithm development, data structures, and optimized code for microcontrollers.
- Hands-on debugging and test experience with lab instruments (logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, JTAG/ICE, protocol analyzers).
- Experience with version control systems such as SVN, Git, or TFS and common hardware/firmware development methodologies.
- Experience targeting Microsemi/Actel FPGAs and using QuestaSim or similar simulators is desirable for the role.
- Ability to analyze functional issues, profile performance, and debug systems at hardware/firmware integration level.
Nice-to-have:
- SystemVerilog verification experience with AVM/VMM/OVM/UVM.
- Experience developing in C# for enhanced Flash microcontrollers.
- Prior work in aerospace / defense or on fuzing/weapon-system electronics.
Education Requirements
One of the following: Bachelor's degree plus a minimum of 6 years of relevant experience; graduate degree (Master's) plus a minimum of 4 years; or, in lieu of a degree, a minimum of 10 years of related experience. No specific field of study or certifications were specified.
