Job Title
Senior Specialist, FPGA Engineer
Role Summary
As a Senior FPGA Engineer on the hardware engineering team, you will architect, design, and develop FPGA-based Electronic Safe and Arm Devices (fuzes) for DoD weapon systems. The role focuses on RTL design, verification, embedded firmware, and delivering production-qualified hardware and firmware.
Experience Level
Senior β typical guidance: Bachelor's degree + 6 years' related experience; Master's degree + 4 years; or 10 years' equivalent practical experience.
Responsibilities
Accountable for design, verification, and lab validation of FPGA and associated firmware products.
- Define architecture and implement FPGA designs in Verilog targeting antifuse and enhanced Flash FPGAs (Microsemi/Actel).
- Develop and run SystemVerilog UVM verification environments where applicable.
- Implement embedded firmware in C and C# for microcontroller components.
- Integrate sensor interfaces, A/D and D/A, communication protocols, state machines, and timer chains.
- Debug and profile hardware/firmware in test environments and target systems using logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, JTAG/ICE, and protocol analyzers.
- Participate in design reviews, unit/system testing, and version-control workflows.
- Contribute to process improvements to enhance quality and time-to-market.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience:
- Proven Verilog RTL experience and solid digital design principles.
- Embedded C programming for constrained/performance-critical systems.
- Hands-on use of lab debug tools (logic analyzer, oscilloscope, JTAG/ICE).
- Experience with FPGA toolchains and simulation (QuestaSim preferred) and working knowledge of Microsemi/Actel devices.
- Familiarity with software/firmware development practices: code reviews, unit testing, and version control (SVN/Git/TFS).
- Ability to analyze and resolve functional and performance issues in hardware/firmware systems.
Nice-to-have:
- SystemVerilog verification experience with UVM/OVM/AVM/VMM.
- C# development targeting enhanced Flash microcontrollers.
- Experience in aerospace/defense product development.
Education Requirements
Preferred: Bachelor's degree (minimum 6 years' related experience) or Master's degree (minimum 4 years' related experience). In lieu of a degree, 10 years of related practical experience is acceptable. Specific fields are not explicitly stated; engineering or related technical degrees are implied.
