Job Title
Senior Specialist, Electrical Engineering, FPGA Engineer (FOS)
Role Summary
Design and develop FPGA-based hardware and associated microcontroller firmware for Electronic Safe and Arm Devices used in DoD weapon systems. The role covers architecture, RTL design, verification, hardware bring-up, and cross-functional integration to deliver reliable fuzing solutions.
Work spans FPGA RTL (Verilog), verification, firmware integration, lab validation, and process improvement to meet quality and schedule goals.
Experience Level
Senior — typically requires 6+ years of relevant experience and responsibility for FPGA architecture, verification, and system integration.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include:
- Architect, design, implement, and debug FPGA logic (Verilog) targeting Antifuse and enhanced Flash FPGAs.
- Develop and execute verification plans using SystemVerilog/UVM and simulation tools.
- Implement and maintain microcontroller firmware (C; C# knowledge beneficial) and integrate with FPGA designs.
- Perform hardware bring-up, functional debug, and performance profiling in lab and target systems.
- Use lab instruments (logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, JTAG/ICE, protocol analyzers) for diagnosis and validation.
- Contribute to design verification practices, code reviews, unit testing, and process improvements.
- Use version control systems (SVN, Git, TFS) and collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver producible designs.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience:
- Strong Verilog HDL experience for FPGA logic design and implementation.
- Embedded C programming experience for microcontrollers, including algorithm development and optimized code.
- Hands-on experience with HDL-based digital design principles, state machines, and timing chains.
- Familiarity with hardware bring-up and lab debug tools (logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, JTAG/ICE).
- Experience with code version control (SVN, Git, TFS) and standard verification workflows (code reviews, unit testing).
Nice-to-have:
- SystemVerilog for verification (UVM/AVM/VMM/OVM) and experience with QuestaSim or similar simulators.
- Experience with Microsemi/Actel FPGAs and enhanced Flash microcontrollers; C# firmware development.
- Experience with A/D and D/A interfaces, protocol analyzers, and sensor interfaces for embedded systems.
Education Requirements
Required: Bachelor’s degree. Preferred: Graduate degree (reduces required related experience). In lieu of a degree, 10 years of related experience accepted. Fields mentioned or implied: Electrical Engineering or a related technical discipline.
