Senior Software Engineer — Runtimes and Architecture

Role Summary

Study Arm architecture features and evaluate their applicability and optimal use by modern language runtimes and compilers. Collaborate with architecture and runtime teams to shape architecture proposals and ensure effective real-world use.

Member of the CE-SW Runtimes team focused on improving language support (Java, JavaScript, Python, Rust, WebAssembly, etc.) across Arm platforms and engaging with open-source communities.

Responsibilities

The role involves technical evaluation, collaboration with architects and runtime engineers, and contributing to tools, documentation and open-source projects.

  • Analyse architecture features and identify opportunities for use in language runtimes and compilers.
  • Work with architects to refine or propose architecture extensions.
  • Lead and own investigations; deliver results with appropriate guidance.
  • Collaborate across Arm and with external communities to ensure effective use of architecture features.
  • Contribute to open-source projects and community engagement.
  • Produce documentation and external communications summarising findings.
  • Develop tooling and automation to support analysis and validation.

Requirements

  • Flexible, inquisitive, problem-solving approach and commitment to continuous learning.
  • Experience working on language runtimes, compilers, or similar systems software.
  • Strong programming skills in at least one of C, C++ or Rust.
  • Familiarity with computer architecture and microarchitecture concepts (cache hierarchies, CPU pipelines), preferably relating to AArch64.

Nice-to-have:

  • Experience with Java, JavaScript, Python, Rust or WebAssembly.
  • Familiarity with AArch64 assembly and low-level development.
  • Experience with Linux performance analysis and system-level tuning.
  • Familiarity with build systems and CI; prior open-source contributions.
