Senior Software Engineer — Runtimes and Architecture

Role Summary

Investigate Arm architecture features and evaluate their applicability and optimal use in modern language runtimes and compilers. Collaborate with Arm architects, runtime engineers, and open-source communities to influence architecture proposals and enable effective real-world implementations.

Member of the CE-SW Runtimes team; work spans languages such as Java, JavaScript, Python, Rust and WebAssembly to improve language support on Arm CPUs.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include technical investigation, collaboration with architects and runtime teams, and contributing to tooling and community projects.

  • Analyse architecture features to identify opportunities for use in language runtimes and compilers.
  • Collaborate with architects to refine or propose architecture changes where appropriate.
  • Lead and be accountable for specific technical investigations with appropriate independence.
  • Work with colleagues across the organisation to ensure effective use of the Arm architecture.
  • Contribute to and engage with open-source projects and communities.
  • Produce documentation and technical communications (internal reports, external posts) to share findings.
  • Develop tooling and automation to support analysis and validation activities.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and experience, plus additional desirable skills.

Must-have

  • Experience working on language runtimes, compilers, or similar low-level language tooling.
  • Strong programming skills in at least one of C, C++ or Rust.
  • Familiarity with computer architecture and microarchitecture concepts (e.g. cache hierarchies, CPU pipelines), preferably relating to AArch64.
  • Flexible, problem-solving approach and willingness to expand technical breadth.

Nice-to-have

  • Proficiency in one or more of Java, JavaScript, Python, Rust or WebAssembly.
  • Familiarity with AArch64 assembly and low-level development.
  • Experience with Linux performance analysis tools and system-level tuning.
  • Familiarity with build systems, CI, and contributing to open-source projects.
