Senior Software Engineer - Control Systems

Role Summary

Design and implement high-performance control systems that operate and orchestrate Atom Computing's quantum hardware. Work spans embedded firmware, real-time software, GPU/FPGA acceleration, and hardware orchestration to deliver deterministic, low-latency control pipelines.

This is a hands-on engineering role collaborating with theory, hardware, and software teams. The role requires working in the office in Boulder or Austin at least three days per week.

Experience Level

Responsibilities

Deliver production-ready, deterministic control software and firmware for quantum control hardware.

• Build and test embedded firmware and software for high-speed SDRs, imaging pipelines, scientific instrumentation, and real-time digital feedback loops.
• Design and optimize low-latency software including device drivers, Linux kernel modules, and custom subsystems.
• Evaluate and architect real-time execution strategies across Linux and RTOS environments to meet determinism and throughput targets.
• Develop orchestration layers coordinating GPUs, FPGAs, and custom electronics for synchronized, high-bandwidth control operations.
• Prototype and iterate using Rust, Python, C/C++, CUDA, and FPGA toolchains (VHDL/Verilog).
• Collaborate with quantum theorists and engineers to translate control flows into reliable, production code.

Requirements

• Must-have: At least 5 years of relevant professional experience in embedded, systems, or performance-oriented software engineering.
• Must-have: Proficiency in one or more of C++, Python, Rust, or Go.
• Must-have: Experience developing embedded firmware or low-latency software (device drivers, real-time systems, or similar).
• Nice-to-have: Experience with NVIDIA CUDA or GPU acceleration.
• Nice-to-have: Familiarity with FPGA development and HDL (VHDL/Verilog) or experience coordinating FPGA toolchains.
• Nice-to-have: Background in computer architecture, signal processing, algorithm development, quantum error correction, distributed systems, or compilers.

Education Requirements

BS, MS, or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field (as stated). The posting also specifies at least 5 years of relevant postgraduate professional experience.
