Senior Software Engineer - Compilers (LLVM)

Role Summary

Work on LLVM compiler technology to maximize performance for Arm architectures (e.g. SVE, SME). Collaborate with the LLVM open-source community and internal product teams to upstream changes, influence optimisation strategies, and improve application and benchmark performance on Arm hardware.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include technical leadership within LLVM-related compiler development and cross-team collaboration.

  • Provide technical expertise and influence across LLVM compiler development for Arm and upstream, shaping optimisation strategies and technical decisions.
  • Mentor engineers inside the LLVM team and in the external community.
  • Represent Arm in the LLVM ecosystem, lead upstream contributions, and align with partners and community direction.
  • Partner with internal Arm teams to define priorities and deliver integrated solutions that support Arm’s roadmap.
  • Champion improvements in development workflows, profiling methodologies, and performance benchmarking processes.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills, community experience, and collaboration abilities.

  • Excellent programming skills in C/C++.
  • Proven participation in the LLVM open-source community (code commits and reviews).
  • Hands-on experience analysing performance bottlenecks and profiling workloads.
  • Experience with low-level software or hardware development that requires interpreting computer-architecture specifications (compilers, debuggers, models, etc.).
  • Strong software development practices: coding, testing, debugging, and code review.
  • Effective communication skills to influence internal and external partners.
  • Ability to collaborate across teams and sites; proactive problem-solving mindset.

Nice-to-have:

  • Experience with Profile Guided Optimization (PGO).
  • Understanding of computer architecture.
  • Familiarity with Agile methodologies (Scrum or Kanban).
  • Experience with Linux performance analysis tools and system-level performance tuning.
  • Familiarity with build systems and CI.
