Job Title

Senior Silicon Test Engineer

Role Summary

Join Microsoft Silicon, Cloud Hardware, and Infrastructure Engineering (SCHIE) within Compute Silicon & Manufacturing Engineering (CSME) to support design, validation, and manufacturing readiness for Azure-class chips. The role focuses on silicon bring-up, ATE test program development, test validation, and cross-functional support to enable high-volume, high-quality cloud hardware.

Individual contributor role based in Redmond with an in-office cadence of three days per week.

Experience Level

Senior — typically requires 5+ years of relevant industry experience; candidates with advanced degrees may qualify with fewer years.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include silicon test engineering across development and manufacturing stages:

  • Support silicon bring-up, validation, characterization, and manufacturing readiness.
  • Develop and debug ATE test programs, implement test methods, and perform yield analysis for embedded memories.
  • Execute test plans, identify issues, document technical findings, and escalate risks.
  • Collaborate with DFT, design, product, and manufacturing teams for test readiness and issue resolution.
  • Support DFT test content generation, pre-silicon validation, simulation/emulation, and post-silicon debug.
  • Work on assigned product domains (HPC, AI, GPUs, telecom) and support optical/photonic testing when applicable.

Requirements

Must-have items and compliance requirements:

  • Relevant technical engineering experience as required by degree/experience combinations listed in Education Requirements (or equivalent practical experience).
  • Ability to pass Microsoft Cloud Background Check and export-control eligibility verification (citizenship/residency documentation required).
  • Working knowledge of silicon fabrication processes, product qualification, reliability, and basic transistor/device concepts.
  • Familiarity with Design-for-Test (DFT) and test methodology; experience with ATE platforms for bring-up and debug preferred.
  • Strong analytical skills; ability to perform yield analysis and apply basic statistics/DOE concepts.
  • Good written and verbal communication; ability to present technical data and collaborate across teams.
  • Nice-to-have: experience with Advantest 93K or equivalent ATE, optical/photonic test, Linux-based test environments, and debugging software used in validation flows.

Education Requirements

Doctorate (PhD) in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field with 1+ year technical engineering experience; OR Master’s degree in those fields with 4+ years; OR Bachelor’s degree with 5+ years; OR equivalent practical experience. Fields referenced include Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related technical disciplines.
