Job Title

Senior Silicon Photonics TD Reliability Engineer

Role Summary

Senior engineer on the Silicon Photonics Technology Development Quality & Reliability (SiPh TD Q&R) team. Work spans path-finding photonic devices and current process nodes to ensure device and product-level reliability, process certification, and qualification for internal and foundry customers.

Collaborate with fab process integration, R&D design teams, Foundry Q&R, and cross-functional partners to define reliability requirements, execute characterization and accelerated testing, and support transition to high-volume manufacturing.

Experience Level

Senior — typically requires prior photonics engineering experience. Hiring guidance in this posting includes options such as 2+ years in photonics device development at a foundry, or 4+ years of relevant photonics/compound semiconductor experience; PhD candidates are encouraged.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities for the role include reliability engineering, test development, and cross-functional quality support.

  • Assess intrinsic and extrinsic reliability of photonic devices and photonic ICs after fabrication and in integrated product form factors.
  • Design and execute DOEs to develop reliability models and acceleration techniques.
  • Develop reliability characterization methods, analytical tools, and quality screening tests.
  • Define requirements for process certification and product qualification.
  • Root-cause failures from reliability testing or customer returns and drive corrective actions.
  • Support process changes, fab excursion response, and transition from development to HVM with appropriate quality systems.
  • Collaborate across teams to integrate reliability considerations into technology development following Intel's development lifecycle.

Requirements

Must-have experience and technical skills; preferred items are noted separately.

  • Must-have (experience): Proven experience in photonic devices, device characterization, yield, reliability, or test/validation — typical paths include foundry device development or equivalent industry/academic experience (see Education Requirements for degree alternatives).
  • Hands-on experience with semiconductor or compound semiconductor processing and process integration challenges.
  • Experience executing DOEs, SPC principles, and statistical analysis for reliability assessments.
  • Competence in failure-mode analysis, model-based problem solving, and failure analysis methodologies.
  • Strong data analysis skills and familiarity with tools for large data sets (examples: JMP, SAS, Excel); ability to extract and analyze data (SQL scripting or equivalent).
  • Clear verbal and written communication; ability to present concise messages to senior management and influence cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to manage multiple parallel efforts, work under pressure, and deliver execution-driven results.
  • Nice-to-have: Knowledge of semiconductor manufacturing process development, material characterization, photonic datacom/telecom qualification standards (e.g., Telcordia GR-468, AEC-Q102), and experience with quality systems and product qualification.

Education Requirements

PhD in Physics, Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, or related engineering fields is encouraged; alternatively a Master’s in engineering or related field with 4+ years relevant photonics experience. The posting also accepts combinations of industry experience, internships, and academic research as equivalent preparation. Multiple alternative experience pathways are listed in the source (e.g., 2+ years foundry photonics experience or 4+ years academic/industry photonics or compound semiconductor processing experience).
