Senior Silicon Design Engineer
MicrosoftJob Title
Senior Silicon Design Engineer
Role Summary
Work on custom IP development for Microsoft's cloud silicon (Azure Cobalt) within the Semi-Custom and Central IP Silicon (SCIPS) team. Deliver RTL from microarchitecture through implementation, verification, and post-silicon validation while collaborating with SoC, firmware, verification, and physical design teams.
Lead PPA optimization, design signoff activities, silicon bring-up and root-cause analysis, and mentor other engineers to improve design quality and delivery.
Experience Level
Senior-level. Experience guidance varies by education: typical combinations listed include Bachelor's +5 years, Master's +4 years, or Doctorate +1 year; equivalent experience is accepted.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include:
- Develop custom IP RTL from microarchitecture through RTL implementation, verification, and post-silicon validation.
- Collaborate with architecture, SoC, firmware, verification, and physical design teams to deliver IP solutions.
- Design high-performance, power-efficient RTL and drive power/performance/area (PPA) optimization.
- Lead signoff activities: CDC, RDC, lint, synthesis, STA, and timing closure.
- Design hardware algorithms to accelerate data processing operations.
- Drive pre-silicon and post-silicon debug, silicon bring-up, and root-cause analysis of complex system issues.
- Mentor engineers and promote design excellence, automation, and methodology improvements.
Requirements
Minimum non-education requirements and security conditions.
- Proven experience owning RTL implementation, verification, and silicon validation workflows.
- Experience with synthesis flows, static checks, timing closure, and collaboration with physical design teams.
- Strong debugging and problem-solving skills across pre- and post-silicon phases.
- Ability to lead signoff activities (CDC, RDC, lint, synthesis, STA) and drive PPA tradeoffs.
- Demonstrated ability to mentor others and improve design processes and automation.
- Ability to meet Microsoft background and export-control screening; successful candidates must provide proof of citizenship or authorized residency as required for access to export-controlled information.
Education Requirements
Doctorate (PhD) in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field (with ~1+ years technical experience), OR Master's degree in those fields (with ~4+ years), OR Bachelor's degree in those fields (with ~5+ years), OR equivalent practical experience. Fields: electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, or related technical disciplines.
