Job Title

Senior Quantum Engineer

Role Summary

Design and validate scalable readout systems for topological qubits at component, subsystem, and system levels. Work on an interdisciplinary team within Microsoft Quantum to advance qubit measurement, integrate with control systems, and enable scalable quantum hardware development.

Experience Level

Senior-level. Experience guidance varies by education: PhD +1 year, MS +4 years, BS +6 years in industry or R&D, or equivalent practical experience.

Responsibilities

Primary engineering responsibilities and team interactions include:

  • Design and test scalable readout circuitry for topological qubits.
  • Co-design readout systems with qubit and control teams, aligning to evolving device requirements.
  • Perform measurements, analyze and interpret data, and present results to internal stakeholders and external audiences.
  • Build and maintain tools, processes, and test infrastructure to accelerate quantum research and hardware development.
  • Follow and help define laboratory and operational safety protocols; escalate issues appropriately.

Requirements

Must-have skills, legal/security, and environment expectations. Education details are listed separately below.

  • Proven experience applying measurement and electronics engineering to quantum readout or related experimental hardware (industry or R&D settings).
  • Ability to meet Microsoft security and export-control eligibility, including background checks and citizenship/immigration verification requirements.
  • Comfort using modern AI tools to accelerate engineering tasks (measurement analysis, modeling, automation).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for interdisciplinary collaboration.

Nice-to-have:

  • Experience with RF readout techniques for solid-state qubits (e.g., RF-SETs, dispersive readout).
  • Background with semiconductor devices or spin qubits.
  • Experience running cryogenic microwave experiments and working with low-noise amplifiers.

Education Requirements

One of the following or equivalent experience: Doctorate (PhD) in Physics, Engineering, or a related field (typical minimum: PhD +1 year); Master’s degree in Physics, Engineering, or related field (typical minimum: MS +4 years); or Bachelor’s degree in Physics, Engineering, or related field (typical minimum: BS +6 years). The posting explicitly allows equivalent practical experience in lieu of a degree.
