Job Title
Senior Principal CPU Microarchitect
Role Summary
Lead microarchitectural design and RTL development for CPU subsystems within the MIPS architecture group. Collaborate with performance modeling, verification, physical design and software teams to define, implement and converge major CPU blocks to project requirements.
Provide technical leadership, mentor colleagues, and own complex design challenges across instruction fetch, execution, memory and verification domains.
Experience Level
Senior β advanced role. Posting specifies 15+ years of relevant industry experience.
Responsibilities
Primary duties include specification, implementation and verification of major CPU functional blocks and cross-functional collaboration.
- Create microarchitectural specifications from early exploration through detailed definition with performance modeling input.
- Design and implement RTL for major functional blocks; drive convergence to performance, timing, power, area and schedule targets.
- Support verification: testbench and test plan development, performance verification, and debug.
- Collaborate with physical design and DFT teams to meet physical implementation and testability goals.
- Mentor engineers and provide technical leadership on microarchitecture decisions.
- Perform duties in a safe and compliant manner and support Environmental, Health, Safety & Security programs.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and tools; preferred items noted below.
- Deep CPU microarchitecture expertise in one or more areas: instruction fetch, branch prediction, decode, scheduling, out-of-order execution, register renaming, integer/floating-point execution, exception handling, load/store execution, cache or MMU design.
- RTL development experience in Verilog, SystemVerilog, or VHDL.
- Experience with commercial simulators and debugging tools.
- Expert-level logic design skills.
-
Preferred: experience with timing, power and area trade-offs and high-performance CPU microarchitecture techniques.
-
Preferred: familiarity with ISAs such as RISC-V, ARM-v8, or x86; scripting and regular expressions; programming in assembly, C, or C++; emulator experience is a plus.
Education Requirements
Minimum Bachelor's degree (BS) and 15+ years of relevant industry experience. No specific field of study or equivalent-experience language is stated in the source.
