Senior Platform Systems Engineer
Role Summary
Senior engineer on Microsoft Silicon, Cloud Hardware, and Infrastructure Engineering (SCHIE) supporting cloud platform bring-up, validation, and production-scale deployment of compute, storage, networking, and accelerator hardware.
Work with cross-functional teams (silicon, firmware, hardware design, validation, OS, manufacturing, customers) to define and execute platform debug, validation, and operational measures of success for Microsoft cloud hardware.
Experience Level
Senior - typically 7+ years of relevant technical engineering experience; role expects substantial system-level hardware debugging and platform bring-up experience.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include:
- Lead platform bring-up, system debug, and triage of complex hardware issues across HW/FW/SW stacks.
- Define and execute pre-silicon and post-silicon test, validation, and SOC integration plans.
- Perform hands-on debugging and develop methodologies for remote datacenter issue resolution.
- Assess technical risk (NUDD items), propose mitigations, and influence product architecture for reliability, performance, and scalability.
- Coordinate cross-organization teams and external partners to onboard new technologies and enable solutions at scale.
Requirements
Must-have and preferred qualifications (must-have items listed first):
- Must: Ability to meet Microsoft and customer security screening requirements, including passing the Microsoft Cloud background check on hire and periodically thereafter.
- Must: Willingness to travel up to ~25% as required.
- Nice-to-have: Experience with hardware, firmware, management firmware, and software interfaces across system modules.
- Nice-to-have: Experience leading validation strategies, platforms debug forums, and bringing up and deploying new hardware technologies at datacenter scale.
- Nice-to-have: Knowledge of datacenter operations, performance, reliability, and large-scale deployment considerations.
Education Requirements
One of the following is required: Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field plus 3+ years technical engineering experience; OR Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field plus 5+ years technical engineering experience; OR equivalent experience. Preferred: 7+ years of technical engineering experience and extensive system-level design/implementation experience across the hardware development lifecycle.
