Job Title
Senior Physical Design Engineer
Role Summary
Lead block- and chip-level physical design (PD) activities for GPUs and related SoCs, owning implementation tasks from floorplanning through GDSII delivery. Work within a global PD team and collaborate closely with RTL and verification engineers to meet timing, power, area, and manufacturability goals.
Experience Level
Mid-level: typically requires 4+ years of experience in Physical Design.
Responsibilities
The engineer will drive physical implementation and closure activities and support team members in tool and design issues.
- Lead block/chip-level PD activities including floorplanning, placement & routing, CTS, and timing closure.
- Perform RC extraction, STA, EM/IR analysis, DRC checks, and schematic-to-layout verification.
- Develop and improve RTL-to-GDSII flow to optimize power, performance, and area (PPA).
- Troubleshoot and debug tool or design issues; provide guidance and mentorship to junior engineers.
- Collaborate with RTL, verification, and signoff teams to achieve timing and layout closure.
- Produce and maintain automation scripts and tool flows to support PD tasks.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience. Nice-to-have items listed separately.
- Minimum: 4+ years of hands-on physical design experience.
- Strong understanding of RTL-to-GDSII implementation concepts: synthesis, place & route, CTS, timing convergence, and layout closure.
- Experience with industry P&R and signoff tools (examples: Innovus, ICC2, Primetime, Tempus) and standard place & route flows.
- Proven skills in timing analysis, STA, constraints, and timing closure methodologies.
- Automation and scripting skills (Perl, Tcl, Make or equivalent) for tool integration and flow development.
- Ability to work across time zones, strong communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Nice-to-have: deep experience with high-frequency design methodologies and full-chip floorplanning; familiarity with Synopsys and Cadence flows.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree (BE/BTech) or Master's degree (MTech) in a relevant engineering discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
