Job Title

Senior Physical Design Engineer, Annapurna Labs (AWS)

Role Summary

Join the Cloud-Scale Machine Learning Acceleration team to design and optimize custom SoCs used in AWS ML servers (Inferentia, Trainium). The role focuses on physical implementation, sign-off, and methodology development to deliver high-quality silicon at scale.

Experience Level

Senior β€” typically 6+ years of ASIC physical design experience (RTL-to-GDSII).

Responsibilities

The engineer will own physical implementation tasks and collaborate with RTL, architecture, and verification teams to achieve design closure.

  • Drive architectural feasibility studies and power-performance-area tradeoff analysis with RTL/logic teams.
  • Implement IO/core subsystems and blocks: synthesis, floorplanning, pin/bus planning, place & route, power/clock distribution.
  • Perform congestion analysis, timing closure, IR drop analysis, physical verification, ECOs, and sign-off.
  • Develop and improve physical design methodologies and implementation flows.
  • Evaluate third-party IP, specify physical-domain requirements, and integrate IP into designs.
  • Collaborate across teams and mentor junior physical designers as needed.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and domain experience.

  • Proficient scripting experience with Python, Perl, Bash, or PowerShell.
  • 6+ years of hands-on ASIC physical design experience (RTL-to-GDSII) using commercial EDA tools.
  • Practical experience with synthesis, equivalency verification, floor planning, pin/bus planning, P&R, power/clock distribution, congestion analysis, timing closure, IR drop analysis, physical verification, and ECOs.
  • Deep understanding of sign-off activities: timing, IR/EM, and physical verification.
  • Experience evaluating and integrating 3rd-party IP and driving IP requirements in the physical domain.

Nice-to-have / Preferred:

  • Experience mentoring or leading junior engineers.
  • Proven ability to develop CAD flows and automation for synthesis, P&R, and verification tasks.
  • Knowledge of device physics, custom/semi-custom implementation, and system interfaces (DDR, PCIe, fabrics).
  • Experience extracting QOR metrics and analyzing design parameter trends.

Education Requirements

Specified: BS with 8+ years relevant experience, or MS with 6+ years in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science. No other degrees or certifications were specified.
