Job Title

Senior Physical Design Engineer, Amazon Leo

Role Summary

Join the Amazon Leo team building digital SoCs for Low Earth Orbit satellite communications and gateway systems. The role focuses on physical implementation of modem, high-speed interface, embedded processor and DSP blocks in advanced CMOS nodes and requires close collaboration with RTL, architecture and system teams.

This is a small, startup-like engineering sub-team responsible for defining and delivering digital ASIC solutions for satellite communications.

Experience Level

Senior - requires 7+ years of ASIC implementation experience; 10+ years preferred.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include physical design implementation, closure and methodology development for digital SoCs.

  • Drive IO and core block physical implementation: synthesis, floorplanning, place & route, timing closure, congestion analysis, IR drop, ECOs and sign-off.
  • Collaborate with RTL/logic and architecture teams to evaluate architectural feasibility and PPA tradeoffs.
  • Plan bus/pin assignments, power/clock distribution and physical verification flows.
  • Develop and improve physical design methodologies and flows, including use of AI/ML-assisted tools.
  • Evaluate third-party IP and provide integration recommendations.
  • Work effectively in a small, multi-disciplinary team and across distributed teams.

Requirements

Must-have and preferred technical qualifications and constraints.

Must-have:

  • 7+ years' experience in ASIC implementation covering synthesis, STA, DFT and P&R for deep sub-micron nodes.
  • Hands-on experience with physical implementation tasks listed above (timing closure, IR drop, physical verification, ECOs).
  • Experience evaluating and integrating 3rd-party IP into digital top flows.
  • Ability to collaborate across RTL/architecture, RF/analog integration teams, and multi-site teams.
  • Must satisfy export-control hiring requirement: U.S. citizen, U.S. national, U.S. permanent resident (Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted as a refugee or granted asylum.

Nice-to-have:

  • Experience integrating RF/analog/mixed-signal blocks with digital top flows.
  • Strong exposure to UPF or other low-power design flows.
  • Experience working in multi-site, multi-team environments.
  • Experience using managed ML/AI solutions to improve design flows.

Education Requirements

Basic requirement: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field. Preferred: Master's degree in Electrical or Communications Engineering. No specific certifications listed.
