Job Title

Senior Physical Design Engineer

Role Summary

Lead physical implementation and timing closure for advanced ASIC designs, collaborating with front-end, mixed-signal, and verification teams to deliver GDS-level signoff. Focus areas include place-and-route, timing analysis, physical verification, and automation of flows.

Experience Level

Senior; typically 6+ years' experience in physical design, or 3+ years with a Master's degree (as stated by the employer).

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Drive physical design and timing closure from netlist to GDS.
  • Partner with mixed-signal teams to integrate analog I/Os and macros.
  • Perform multi-mode, multi-corner timing closure, RC extraction, crosstalk, IR drop, and EM analysis.
  • Work with front-end teams to create and update timing constraints.
  • Execute physical verification tasks (DRC, LVS, ERC, antenna checks) and resolve violations.
  • Debug timing violations, implement functional and timing ECOs, and perform formal verification as needed.

Requirements

Technical must-haves and preferred skills.

  • Hands-on experience with Synopsys or Cadence place-and-route and timing toolsets.
  • Proven ability to form methodologies and automate physical design flows.
  • Experience with timing closure processes and associated analyses (RC extraction, crosstalk, IR/EM).
  • Familiarity with physical verification flows and tools for DRC/LVS/ERC/antenna checks.
  • Experience debugging timing issues, executing ECOs, and applying formal verification techniques.
  • Scan insertion and DFT knowledge is a plus.

Education Requirements

BS in Electrical or Computer Engineering (or equivalent practical experience) with 6+ years in physical design; or MS in Electrical or Computer Engineering (or equivalent practical experience) with 3+ years in physical design. The posting explicitly allows equivalent practical experience in lieu of the degree.
