Job Title
Senior Physical Design Engineer
Role Summary
Performs physical implementation of custom IP and SoC designs from RTL to GDS. Responsible for the full physical design flow, signoff, design optimization (power, performance, area), and development of design methodologies and automation.
Experience Level
Senior-level β requires 5+ years of relevant physical design experience.
Responsibilities
The role delivers production-ready physical design databases and supports signoff and methodology development.
- Implement RTL-to-GDS flow including synthesis, floorplanning, placement, clock-tree synthesis, routing, and timing closure.
- Perform signoff activities: static timing analysis (STA), layout vs. schematic, formal equivalence, ERC/DRC, and electrical/structural checks.
- Analyze design results and recommend corrective actions for timing, power, signal integrity, and reliability issues.
- Optimize designs for power, frequency, and area; support multi-power-domain and multi-clock-domain designs.
- Develop and improve physical design methodologies and automation scripts.
- Mentor junior engineers and contribute to team development.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience.
- 5+ years of relevant experience in physical/structural IC design.
- Multiple tape-out experience in deep submicron process nodes.
- In-depth hands-on experience with physical design flow and industry-standard EDA tools (synthesis, P&R, STA).
- Experience with signoff flows: STA, LEC, ERC, DRC.
- Proficiency in scripting (Perl, TCL, Python) and familiarity with HDLs (VHDL, Verilog).
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to multitask and work in a diverse team.
Preferred:
- Experience with low-power design methodologies and power intent (UPF).
- Experience handling multiple clock domains and power management in physical design.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Electronic Engineering, or a related field is required by the source. A master's degree is listed as preferred.
