Senior Physical Design Engineer

Role Summary

Responsible for implementing ASIC physical designs to meet timing, power, area, and manufacturability targets. Works on a physical design team interfacing with RTL, timing, verification, DFT and backend teams to deliver tapeout-ready designs.

Experience Level

Senior — typically a senior engineer role (guidance: 7+ years of relevant ASIC physical design experience).

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include:

• Lead floorplanning, placement, clock-tree synthesis, routing and engineering-change-orders (ECOs) for complex digital blocks and full-chips.
• Drive timing closure using static timing analysis and resolve setup/hold violations.
• Perform power optimization and congestion analysis; support DRC/LVS and foundry signoff tasks.
• Develop and maintain automation and signoff flows (scripting, build flows, regression runs).
• Coordinate cross-functional work with RTL, verification, DFT and manufacturing teams to resolve design issues.
• Mentor and review work from junior engineers; participate in design and signoff reviews.

Requirements

Must-have:

• Proven hands-on ASIC physical design experience, including place-and-route and timing closure for digital designs.
• Experience with clock-tree synthesis, ECO flow, congestion analysis, and power optimization.
• Familiarity with static timing analysis, DRC/LVS signoff processes and tapeout flows.
• Proficiency in scripting for automation (Python, Tcl, Perl, or similar).
• Strong collaboration and communication skills; ability to lead technical deliverables and reviews.

Nice-to-have:

• Experience with commercial EDA tools and signoff tools and workflows.
• Experience on large SoC or advanced-node designs.
