Senior Physical Design Engineer
Role Summary
Responsible for physical implementation of custom IP and SoC designs from RTL to GDS, producing manufacturing-ready design databases. The role sits within Intel's Central Engineering Group and supports product and custom ASIC customers on timing, power, and layout quality.
Work includes leading physical design flows, verification and signoff activities, and improving design methodologies and automation.
Experience Level
Senior — requires substantial industry experience (typical guidance: Master's with ~6+ years or Bachelor's with ~8+ years of physical-design execution experience).
Responsibilities
Hands-on engineering and technical leadership across the physical design flow:
- Perform and lead RTL-to-GDS physical design implementation for custom IP and SoC designs.
- Execute synthesis, place & route, clock tree synthesis, floorplanning, and timing closure.
- Conduct static timing analysis, power and noise analysis, reliability checks, and power/clock distribution design.
- Perform verification and signoff tasks: formal equivalence checks, layout verification, electrical rule checking, and structural checks.
- Analyze violations and recommend fixes affecting current and future architectures.
- Optimize designs for power, performance, and area (PPA) and contribute to flow and methodology improvements.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience:
- Deep knowledge of RTL-to-GDS workflows, including synthesis, place-and-route, and static timing analysis.
- Experience optimizing designs for power, performance, and area (PPA).
- Hands-on experience with industry-standard EDA tools for physical design and verification.
- Comprehensive knowledge of clock tree synthesis and low-power design techniques.
- Experience with competitive timing, floor planning methodologies (TFM), and multi-power-domain analysis.

Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field (typically with 8+ years of physical-design experience), or a Master’s degree in a related field (typically with 6+ years of physical-design experience).
