Job Title

Senior Optical Manufacturing Test Engineer - Hardware Automation

Role Summary

The Senior Optical Manufacturing Test Engineer will develop, validate, and maintain automated test systems and processes for Lumilens' photonic components, modules, and systems. The role supports new product introduction (NPI) and volume manufacturing, collaborating with optical design, hardware, quality, and manufacturing teams.

Primary responsibilities include tester design and release, production test ownership, yield and reliability analysis, and continuous improvement of test throughput and quality.

Experience Level

Senior β€” 7+ years of experience in high-volume optical transceiver manufacturing and/or automated test system development.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include ownership of production test hardware, processes, and data to ensure product quality and manufacturability.

  • Own end-to-end manufacturing test: equipment selection, tester BOM, test schematics, test flows, and work instructions under change control and QMS.
  • Develop, assemble, validate, and release production testers; document tester specifications and performance.
  • Analyze test data to verify compliance with performance and quality specifications; generate test reports.
  • Drive yield, cycle time, throughput, and scrap reduction through continuous improvement and root cause analysis.
  • Perform optical and fiber testing, calibration, and production verification of fiber-optic components and modules.
  • Implement process control for testers, including SPC, GR&R, and correlation studies.
  • Collaborate on qualification testing with quality teams and ensure DFM/DFT guidelines with design and process engineering.
  • Work with contract manufacturers to train operators, provide test process guidelines, and approve test changes.
  • Define troubleshooting guidelines, tools, and data-analysis approaches for manufacturing testers.
  • Collaborate with software/IT teams to improve test-data management, analysis, and scalability.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and capabilities for the role; separate items that are preferred.

  • Must-have: Expert knowledge of optical test equipment and protocols relevant to optical transceivers.
  • Must-have: Hands-on experience with optical test instruments (optical spectrum analyzers, power meters, polarization controllers, bit-error-rate testers).
  • Must-have: Demonstrated experience in yield analysis, manufacturing problem solving, and implementing process improvements.
  • Must-have: Practical experience with SPC, GR&R, tester correlation, and report generation.
  • Must-have: Ability to write or adapt automation scripts (Python, LabVIEW, Visual Basic); familiarity with test automation tools and processor communication interfaces.
  • Must-have: Knowledge of quality management systems and quality standard requirements; experience with reliability testing and quality control practices.
  • Must-have: Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills, ability to manage multiple projects, and effective verbal/written English communication for training and presentations.
  • Must-have: Willingness and ability to travel internationally as required.
  • Nice-to-have: Experience with high-speed transceiver module tests at 400G, 800G, 1.6T.
  • Nice-to-have: Data query and statistical analysis skills; experience integrating test data with databases and analytics workflows; shell scripting is a plus.

Education Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Physics, or a related field, plus 7 years of experience in high-volume optical transceiver manufacturing and/or automated test system development. Preferred experience includes transceiver module testing at 400G, 800G, or 1.6T. (Information drawn from the source posting.)
