Job Title

Senior Module Development Engineer

Role Summary

Embedded in Advanced Packaging Technology Development (APTD) Metrology, this role owns metrology strategy, equipment qualification, and module development for advanced packaging programs. The engineer balances hands-on equipment work, process integration, and vendor engagement to ensure measurement readiness and program risk mitigation.

Experience Level

Senior β€” typically expects experienced engineers (e.g., 6+ years with a Bachelor's, or equivalent experience depending on degree level).

Responsibilities

Work spans strategic roadmap definition and hands-on engineering to enable metrology for current and future technology nodes.

  • Develop and enable metrology and inspection processes for advanced packaging across development and high-volume manufacturing.
  • Define and own the metrology group's long-range technology roadmap based on industry trends and program needs.
  • Design, configure, and optimize measurement processes, parameters, and equipment for new architectures.
  • Lead pathfinding and feasibility studies using simulations and experimental methods to evaluate new measurement approaches.
  • Evaluate and qualify metrology equipment end-to-end: installation, acceptance testing, process validation, and fab readiness.
  • Provide primary technical support for fabs: diagnose process excursions, resolve metrology-related holds, and maintain tool performance and availability.
  • Partner with equipment and materials suppliers to co-develop tool capabilities and implementation plans.
  • Implement rapid inline feedback mechanisms and collaborate with AI/ML and APC teams for predictive monitoring and excursion detection.
  • Lead metrology module development from first wafer through process sign-off, including recipe development, SPC strategy, and sampling plans.
  • Represent metrology in cross-functional program reviews and present capability, readiness, and risk to integration and senior leadership.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and practical experience to perform the role; preferred items are listed separately.

  • Must-have: Demonstrated expertise in semiconductor processing, wafer-level assembly, or cleanroom manufacturing environments.
  • Must-have: Proficiency in process development methodologies, statistical process control (SPC), and manufacturing process improvement.
  • Must-have: Technical experience in module engineering or fab process/hardware technology development, including equipment qualification to fab readiness.
  • Must-have: Hands-on experience with metrology/inspection equipment and practical problem solving in production or advanced development programs.
  • Preferred: Strong metrology fundamentals and prior development experience; direct vendor co-development experience at the technical roadmap level.
  • Preferred: Experience with packaging processes, equipment automation development, project management, and collaboration with yield/operations teams.
  • Preferred: Data analysis skills and experience leveraging analytics for process optimization; familiarity with Python, dashboard creation, or scripting.
  • Preferred: Experience integrating metrology with AI/ML or advanced process control for predictive monitoring.

Education Requirements

Required: Bachelor's degree in Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, or related STEM field plus 6+ years' relevant experience; OR Master's degree in the same fields plus 4+ years; OR PhD in the same fields plus 2+ years. Equivalent practical experience acceptable as indicated by the alternative qualification paths.
